Local Active Modes Plan to Proceed!
The cycle network is a bit like the human body's circulation system. We need arteries and capillaries. We have some great arteries built (Nelson St, North West Cycleway, Meola Road) or under construction (Great North Road) but the Waitemata Local Board have also developed a low cost local active modes plan to connect up the network using parks and residential streets that are quieter and may already have some traffic calming measures.
On Tuesday 16 the board supported (unanimously) proceeding with seven projects from that plan that will make it easier to get from Meola Road to Herne Bay, Westhaven and Britomart and beyond, and to connect Westmere to West Lynn, Ponsonby, Karangahape and through the central city through sharrows, wayfinding, traffic calming, and extra paths. The whole programme costs about $1m and the budget is there so they can get going. I'm really pleased. A connected cycle network is more valuable than the sum of its parts.
